Closed Rhinoplasty in Seoul, Korea
Closed rhinoplasty reshapes the nasal bridge and tip through incisions made inside the nostrils, so there is no external scar on the columella. Because the columellar blood supply is preserved, swelling usually settles faster than after open surgery, and the splint comes off around day 7.

Who is Closed Rhinoplasty for?
- You want a refined nose without a visible scar
- This is your first rhinoplasty
- You need to return to work or fly home within about a week
- You want to correct a hump, crooked bridge or bulbous tip without an external incision
How Closed Rhinoplasty works
In a closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty, every incision is placed on the mucosa inside the nose. Through these openings the surgeon lifts the soft tissue just enough to reshape the bone and cartilage, place an implant or graft, and refine the tip.
The columella — the strip of skin between the nostrils — is left intact. This keeps the arteries that supply the nasal tip, which is one reason swelling and bruising are often milder than with an open approach.
Closed rhinoplasty demands precise work through a narrow field. At Cellis Lab Clinic it is the default approach for primary rhinoplasty, combined where needed with septal or ear cartilage and SOFIT 3D-CT custom implants.
Our approach to Closed Rhinoplasty
No external scar
All incisions are inside the nostrils, so nothing is visible on the columella once healed.
Preserved tip blood supply
Leaving the columellar artery intact helps reduce swelling and supports faster recovery.
Cartilage and custom implants
Septal or ear cartilage and SOFIT custom implants can be placed and secured through the closed approach.
Closed Rhinoplasty: step by step
- 3D-CT analysis and designWe assess bridge height, septum and tip cartilage and agree on your profile and front-view width.
- Incisions inside the nostrilsSmall incisions are made in the nasal lining and only the necessary area is lifted.
- Bridge and tip reshapingThe bridge is raised or smoothed with an implant or your own tissue, and the tip is sutured or supported with cartilage.
- Closure and splintIncisions are closed with dissolvable sutures and the shape is held with tape and a splint for about a week.
Closed vs open rhinoplasty
| Closed rhinoplasty | Open rhinoplasty | |
|---|---|---|
| Incisions | Inside the nostrils only | Across the columella plus inside the nostrils |
| Visible scar | None | Fine line on the columella that fades over time |
| Swelling and bruising | Usually milder | Tip swelling tends to last longer |
| Typical use | Primary surgery, bridge and tip refinement, hump or bulbous tip | Contracted nose, complex revision, severe deformity |
Risks and side effects of Closed Rhinoplasty
- Swelling and bruisingMost settles in 1–2 weeks; cold compresses and keeping your head raised help.
- InfectionUncommon. Increasing redness, warmth or pain should be checked by the clinic promptly.
- Temporary asymmetrySwelling can resolve unevenly, so the nose may look slightly asymmetric for a few weeks.
All medical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will review your medical history, explain the risks that apply to you and discuss alternatives before you decide.
Closed Rhinoplasty recovery timeline
| When | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Surgery and rest in a private recovery room; most patients return to their hotel the same day. Cold compresses start straight away. |
| Days 2–3 | Swelling and bruising usually peak. Keep your head elevated, walk gently and avoid alcohol, saunas and exercise. |
| Days 5–7 | Check-up at the clinic; stitches, splints or tapes are removed where used. Most patients are cleared to fly after this visit. |
| Week 2 | Most visible swelling has eased and many people return to desk work and light make-up. |
| Months 1–3 | Residual swelling keeps settling and the shape refines. Strenuous exercise is usually resumed after 4 weeks. |
| Months 6–12 | The final result is generally assessed at this stage. We follow up online after you return home. |
Aftercare tips
- Sleep with your head raised for the first 1–2 weeks.
- Do not wear glasses on the bridge for about 4 weeks.
- Avoid blowing your nose, swimming and saunas for 2–4 weeks.
- Stop aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E 1–2 weeks before surgery unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 2–4 weeks; both slow healing.

Closed Rhinoplasty FAQ
Should I choose closed or open rhinoplasty?
For a first rhinoplasty without major structural problems, closed rhinoplasty is usually considered first. If the nose is contracted or has had several operations, an open approach may be safer.
Will people be able to tell I had closed rhinoplasty?
There is no external incision, and swelling usually settles quickly, so most patients return to work after about a week without obvious signs of surgery.
Can a bulbous tip be corrected with closed rhinoplasty?
In many cases yes. Tip cartilages can be sutured and reshaped through the closed approach; very thick skin may limit how much definition is possible.
