Who is Functional Rhinoplasty for?

  • You have chronic nasal congestion and also want to change the shape of your nose
  • A crooked nose comes with blocked breathing or rhinitis symptoms

How Functional Rhinoplasty works

Many people seeking cosmetic rhinoplasty also have a blocked nose. Treating the airway at the same time avoids a second operation and helps ensure the new shape does not narrow breathing further.

Assessment includes endoscopic examination and CT to locate the cause: a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or a weak nasal valve.

Septoplasty, turbinate reduction or spreader grafts are combined with the cosmetic changes you want.

Our approach to Functional Rhinoplasty

  1. Cause-based assessment

Endoscopy and CT identify where the blockage is.

  2. One combined operation

Septum, turbinate and cosmetic corrections are performed together.

  3. Valve support

Spreader grafts can keep the middle vault open after hump removal.

Functional Rhinoplasty: step by step

  1. Airway assessmentEndoscopy and CT examine the septum, turbinates and valve.
  2. SeptoplastyThe deviated septum is straightened or partly removed.
  3. Turbinate and valve workTurbinates are reduced and valve grafts placed if needed.
  4. Cosmetic refinementBridge and tip changes are made and the nose is splinted.

Risks and side effects of Functional Rhinoplasty

  • Congestion during healingThe nose feels blocked for 1–3 weeks while the lining heals.
  • Persistent symptomsAllergic rhinitis may continue and need medical treatment.
  • NosebleedsMinor bleeding can occur in the first days.

All medical procedures carry risks. Your surgeon will review your medical history, explain the risks that apply to you and discuss alternatives before you decide.

Functional Rhinoplasty recovery timeline

WhenWhat to expect
Day 0Surgery and rest in a private recovery room; most patients return to their hotel the same day. Cold compresses start straight away.
Days 2–3Swelling and bruising usually peak. Keep your head elevated, walk gently and avoid alcohol, saunas and exercise.
Days 5–7Check-up at the clinic; stitches, splints or tapes are removed where used. Most patients are cleared to fly after this visit.
Week 2Most visible swelling has eased and many people return to desk work and light make-up.
Months 1–3Residual swelling keeps settling and the shape refines. Strenuous exercise is usually resumed after 4 weeks.
Months 6–12The final result is generally assessed at this stage. We follow up online after you return home.

Aftercare tips

  • Sleep with your head raised for the first 1–2 weeks.
  • Do not wear glasses on the bridge for about 4 weeks.
  • Avoid blowing your nose, swimming and saunas for 2–4 weeks.
  • Stop aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E 1–2 weeks before surgery unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 2–4 weeks; both slow healing.
